Mazda cars have always been small and zippy. There was the Mazda 626 which was introduced way back in 1979. It redefined the concept of affordable compact sedans. This compact car with its rear wheel drive and 80 hp 2.0 L SOHC straight-4 F/MA was a modest hit in the markets. It sported features like split folding rear seat, five speed manual and three speed automatic transmissions and recirculating ball steering. In 1983, the company released a new front wheel drive version with a new 2.0 L FE engine. Over the years other changes were made to the model including the introduction of 4 wheel steering, motorized seat belts, driver and passenger airbags, larger wheels and so on. The fifth generation of these cars debuted in 1998. It was eventually replaced by its successor, the GG platform Mazda 6.
